The short answer: it's over, for now

So it's entirely possible to move to a country with zero national load-shedding and still experience the odd unscheduled outage if you land in an area with load reduction. Could load-shedding come back?
Possibly, and it's worth being straight about this rather than pretending the problem is permanently solved. Eskom's own medium-term system adequacy outlook, published in late 2025, flagged a high likelihood of renewed load-shedding around 2029 to 2030. The driver isn't today's performance: it's that several of Eskom's oldest coal-fired stations (including Camden, Grootvlei and Hendrina) are scheduled for decommissioning later in the decade, and that capacity needs to be replaced by new gas and renewable generation on a timeline that isn't fully locked in yet.
